County Executive Recognizes Achievements of Marist Women’s Basketball Player Rachele Fitz
Poughkeepsie… Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus has proclaimed today, February 18th, 2011 as “Rachele Fitz Day” in Dutchess County. The County Executive will present an official proclamation to Ms. Fitz at tonight’s women’s basketball game at Marist College’s McCann Center in Poughkeepsie when the Marist Red Foxes retire Rachele Fitz’s #12 jersey. Ms. Fitz will be the first women’s basketball player in Marist College’s history to have her jersey retired.
County Executive Steinhaus said, “Rachele Fitz’s stellar basketball career helped put Marist College in the national basketball spotlight and brought national attention to Dutchess County, helping brand our community. In recognition of her success, we are thrilled to dedicate today as ‘Fitz Friday’ in Dutchess County.”
County Executive Steinhaus has been a longtime, loyal supporter of Marist College’s basketball program and can often be found in the stands cheering on the women’s and men’s teams. He even sat on the team bench as the women’s basketball “Honorary Coach” during Ms.Fitz’s junior year.
“Rachele’s ability to score in the low post against any player, regardless of whether they had a several inch height advantage, was uncanny. Her record speaks for itself… Rookie of the Year in her ’06-’07 freshman year, all time Marist leader in seven different statistical categories….Rachele has been a remarkable player to watch and it is pleasure to celebrate her accomplishments today,” concluded Steinhaus.
