(**IMPORTANT** -- We have switched to using Eventbrite to manage course registrations. Please ignore where it says "Free" in the "Registration Information" box on the Eventbrite event details page -- as always, the cost to attend a DCPF short course is $5.00 per person payable at the door. It says "free" because we are only using Eventbrite to streamline the registration process -- we are not collecting online payments ahead of time, so the system treats it as a free event even though it's not. We apologize for any confusion this may cause, but hope you like the updated process that will include things like a confirmation email, reminder email, and automatic waitlist should the course fill up.)

(Board members may receive 2 hours of required training).

The Dutchess County Planning Federation is beginning a series of workshops and eNewsletters to help local leaders and residents understand the issues around affordable housing. What is it, and how can affordable housing be developed in a way that respects the existing character of our varied communities while addressing the needs of our varied residents?

Part 1 in the series will answer the most basic questions about this sometimes controversial topic:

  • What is the difference between affordable, workforce and welfare housing?

  • What is Section 8?

  • What have we learned from older, poorly planned “public housing projects”?

  • How is today’s affordable housing different from the “projects” of the past (with local examples)?

  • Who lives in today’s affordable housing?

  • What is the need for affordable housing in our communities?

  • What are various ways to develop affordable housing in today’s market?

Future Housing Series sessions will include:

  • Zoning to encourage affordable housing

  • Inclusionary zoning

  • School children generation in affordable housing developments

  • Impact of affordable housing on property values
