Park Hours:
Dawn to Dusk (Closed during the winter months, but cross country skiing/snowshoeing is allowed, weather permitting).

The first four mile segment of the Harlem Valley Rail Trail (HVRT) was opened to the public in September of 1996. In 1989, New York State purchased an approximately 22 mile segment of New York Central Railroad's Harlem Valley line, which had been abandoned. To facilitate development of the trail, Dutchess County entered into an agreement with the State to lease the 17.6 miles of the right-of-way within the County, which has so far resulted in the construction of a paved 10.5-mile multiple use/bike path between Wassaic Train Station and the Village of Millerton's Railroad Square.  A $2 million dollar federal grant was obtained to facilitate construction of the trail from Millerton north to Columbia County in the near future.

The trail provides an opportunity for a variety of users (bicyclists, hikers, walkers, joggers, rollerbladers, the mobility challenged, etc...) to exercise or simply enjoy the fresh air in a natural setting with tremendous scenic beauty. The trail enables people to enjoy the combination of farmlands, wetlands, rock ledges, forest, mountainsides, historic hamlets and village centers that give the Harlem Valley its rural charm. It  also provides opportunities for the close up observation of wildlife and plants in their natural setting, from the safety of the  trail, in some areas which were previously inaccessible.
