View of wetlands seen from Rail Trail in East FishkillDutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus is pleased to introduce the future addition of the Dutchess Rail Trail to the offerings of the Dutchess County Parks Division.  This initiative will give the majority of Dutchess County‚Äôs population access to a significant recreational amenity within minutes.  This new facility will run through the very heart of Dutchess County. This $5-6 million dollar project, funded primarily with federal funds, will span from Morgan Lake in the City of Poughkeepsie to the former Hopewell Junction Depot in the Town of East Fishkill.  The rail trail will follow the path of the Central Dutchess Utility Corridor Waterline, Bridge over Sprout Creekwhich has been constructed by the County and is nearing completion.  This extraordinary undertaking involves the conversion of over 11 miles of the abandoned Maybrook Rail Line of the Penn Central Railroad to a paved bikeway/walkway with appropriate access in the City of Poughkeepsie and the Towns of Poughkeepsie, LaGrange, Wappinger, and East Fishkill.  Existing structures carrying the proposed rail trail will be rehabilitated as necessary to safely carry bicycle and pedestrian traffic.  Stage 1 from Bridge Street (Rt. 376) to Lake Walton Road in East Fishkill, is open for use. Stage 2 from Morgan Lake in the City of Poughkeepsie to Overocker Road in the Town of Poughkeepsie opened on July 9, 2009.
