The Dutchess County Office For The Aging provides a wide array of services to senior citizens in Dutchess County. A short description of the service available appears below.

 

  • Eight Senior Friendship Centers located in towns throughout Dutchess County provide nutritious hot meals at noon and an opportunity for socialization, recreation and other activities. Transportation is available to the sites and for weekly grocery shopping.  Home Delivered Meals  are provided throughout most of Dutchess County.
     

  • Transportation Services include rides to our Senior Friendship Centers and Dial-A-Ride where available.
     

  • Single Point of Entry for community based Long Term Care including home care needs assessment, home care services and case management through DUTCHESS NY Connects.
     

  • Legal Services for those over 60, with a focus on shelter and income issues.
     

  • Reassurance Programs include the "Are You O.K." Program and Personal Emergency Response Systems (PERS).
     

  • Respite Care includes adult day care services and the Vassar Warner Home.
     

  • The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is a Federal program designed to assist eligible, low-income households in meeting home energy costs.  Services include financial assistance with fuel bills, emergency financial assistance for fuel/utility termination, and referrals for weatherization service.  The benefit a household receives from HEAP is based on monthly income, the number of people in the household, and the type of heat generation used.  Income eligibility guidelines are issued each year. To apply for HEAP, clients age 60 and over should contact the Dutchess County Office for The Aging; others contact the Dutchess County Department of Community & Family Services.
     

  • Heating Equipment Repair and Replacement (HERR) helps HEAP eligible homeowners in emergency situations with the repair or replacement of heating equipment.  To be eligible, household must meet income and resource guidelines.
     

  • Caregiver Services, including information, case management, home care, adult day care, overnight respite (see details (.pdf)), personal emergency response systems, case assistance, workshops, counseling, a caregiver resource center, referral and counseling for those who care for older adults in the community.
     

  • Advocacy and Case Assistance, for Medicaid, Food Stamps and other entitlement programs.
     

  • Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP) counsels people and provides workshops on Medicare eligibility, Medigap policy choices, HMO's, Medicare Advantage choices and Long Term Care Insurance.
     

  • The Long Term Care Ombudsman is a community volunteer who advocates on behalf of long term care residents. Trained Ombudsman volunteers visit assigned facilities weekly and discuss with residents their concerns such as resident rights, quality of care and quality of life.
     

  • Income Tax Assistance is provided by trained AARP volunteers.
     

  • Senior Discount Cards are available on the second Wednesday of each month at the Poughkeepsie office.  Cards are available at picnics, health fairs and similar gatherings.
     

  • Information and Referral about care giving support activities, recreational activities and other issues of concern to older people.
     

  • Grandparents Raising Grandchildren are offered support groups, workshops, case assistance and respite.
     

  • The Senior Exercise Program to improve strength and balance is offered at locations throughout the county.
     

  • Brain Games are mental fitness classes which are offered at locations throughout the county.
