Q.   Where can I get certified copies of vital records such as birth certificate, marriage license, death certificate?

Either contact the municipality where the birth occurred OR visit the New York State Department of Health website and scroll through the instructions to learn how to place an order for a birth certificate copy via either the Internet, by fax, by telephone or by mail.

Q.   Where can I get a copy of a Certificate of Dissolution of Marriage?

Q.   How can I get a copy of someone’s will?

To obtain a copy of a will that was filed in Dutchess County, you should mail your request, along with the $30.00 fee, to:

Dutchess County Surrogate Court
10 Market St.Poughkeepsie, NY  12601

In your request letter, you may want to also ask for other information about the estate, such as when the will was filed and who the executor and the attorneys were.  For more information, contact the Dutchess County Surrogate Court at (845) 486-2235.

Q.   How can I obtain copies of my military service and discharge papers?

To obtain copies of your military records, you have two avenues open to you:


  • The Dutchess County Division of Veterans Services will assist you in obtaining your papers.  Contact them at (845) 486-2060 for more information (hours by appointment only).

  • You can order copies of your records from the National Archives and Records Administration; their website provides contact information and order forms.

Q.   I’m an adopted child. Is there anyone who can help me find my biological parents? Do I have the right to have contact with them if I want to?

Adoption and birth records are confidential but there is a New York State Adoption Information Registry at the New York State Department of Health, PO Box 2602, Albany NY 12220 (518) 474-9600.  Click Here to visit their web site which can provide some assistance for an adoptee who was born and adopted in New York.

Q.   How can I find out about health issues relating to a particular water supply, lot, restaurant, regulated facility, etc.?

Most Dutchess County Department of Health records are available to the public through the Freedom of Information Law procedures.  Please submit a specific request.  An Application to Access Records (.pdf) can be found on on our Forms web page.

Q.   Where can I get information on my family and our genealogy?

The most complete service in this field is offered by The Dutchess County Genealogical Society located at P.O.Box 708, Poughkeepsie, NY  12602 with a website of www.dcgs-gen.org. The DCGS is NOT part of Dutchess County government.

Q.   I want to research my deed and the history of my property. Where do I go to find this information?

All questions relating to property and deeds are handled by the Dutchess County Clerk's Office located at 22 Market Street, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.  12601 (phone (845) 486-2120 / fax (845) 486-2138).

Q.   Where is there a collection of artifacts, papers, books, and other items related to the history and people of Dutchess County?

The Dutchess County Historical Society, P.O. Box 88, Poughkeepsie, NY  12602 maintains several historical houses. At the Clinton House, there is a museum of many local artifacts and historical documents. Their phone number is 845-471-1630 and website address is http://www.dutchesscountyhistoricalsociety.org/.
