Mission Statement 

Consumer Affairs Mission Statement ImageTo serve Dutchess County residents by preventing and responding to illegal acts and practices in the sale of consumer items:

  • Enforcement of Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Law as it applies to home improvement contracting and motor vehicle transactions.
     

  • Inspection of all scales and measuring devices in commercial establishments and the testing of petroleum products for quality, including octane, lead content, and clean air act requirements.

In instances when illegal practices are found, civil proceedings are enacted.

The purpose of all of our actions is to promote an atmosphere of trust among consumers, the business community, and County Government by promoting a fair and equitable market place.

A Message From County Executive William Steinhaus:

Consumer fraud cheats Americans out of $100 billion each year. The one element common to most victims of scams is their lack of consumer awareness to the warning signs of fraud. The Consumer Affairs Department is working to ensure that the citizens of Dutchess County are informed about the potential for fraud or deception in the marketplace, and are protected should they become a victim.

As a buyer, if you should have a consumer question, need to file a complaint, or feel you may have become a victim of fraud, contact the Consumer Affairs Department at 486-2949. The Consumer Affairs Department was established in 1979 to be the protector and advocate for the consumer of Dutchess County.
